Psychotherapist/Trainer at Center for Victims of Torture
Dadaab, Kenya
The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Psychotherapist/Trainers who will work full time in the Dadaab Refugee Camp in northern Kenya with refugees who have suffered torture and war trauma.
The position will oversee psychological interventions, including individual and group therapy with adults and children who are survivors of torture, provide training and supervision to national and refugee psychosocial counselors, and liaise with the community, other NGOs, and local organizations.
The position is an unaccompanied post, and has a one-year renewable agreement. This is a national position that can only be filled with someone with Kenyan citizenship.

Responsibilities:
- Work as part of the country team to achieve program objectives.
- Training: Design and carry out training programs, including didactic training sessions, mentoring, modeling and close supervision, for local and refugee psychosocial counselors. Continually assess development of counselors and adapt training to meet their needs.
- Clinical Management & Psychotherapy: Oversee and coordinate mental health assessment and interventions for refugee communities, and serve as a co-therapist with counselors in individual, family, and group settings to model assessment and treatment methods that are both culturally relevant and empirically supported.
- Clinical Supervision: Provide individual and group clinical supervision, including case discussions, live supervision, and self-care components.
- Leadership: In partnership with Field Coordinator, provide on-site leadership for staff. Participate in regular leadership meetings in Dadaab as well as with Nairobi leadership staff.
- Community Assessment: Mentor counselors to complete needs assessments in order to identify target populations and program sites, and to determine appropriate mental health interventions for people who have been tortured or traumatized by war.
- Community Collaboration: Coordinate services with other organizations. Provide training to partner organizations to better address the needs of torture survivors in the community. Help coordinate and carry out community and large group trainings and activities.
- Reporting: Contribute to the writing and submission of regular reports regarding clinical and training activities.
- Program Evaluation: In collaboration with country team and headquarters staff, participate in the design and implementation of program and project evaluation.
- Perform other duties as assigned in the implementation of program activities.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Psychology, Counseling or Clinical Social Work. Masters degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
- Fluency in English. Fluency in Swahili and/or Somali preferred.
- Extensive experience providing individual and group psychotherapy to trauma survivors.
- Understanding of and extensive experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered torture and trauma.
- Understanding of and experience developing curricula and providing training for mental health counselors, on topics including theory and practice of therapeutic approaches, effects of trauma and war, and treatment planning.
- Experience working in a refugee camp in Africa, preferred.
- Experience supervising mental health counselors.
- Skilled at carrying out program needs assessments, program development, and program evaluations.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in a developing country, in unpredictable, politically unstable, isolated environment, lacking in amenities.
- Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing program requirements, client needs, and political climate.
- Skilled at working as a member of a team.
