Background:
Save the Children has been operational in Kenya since the 1950s, providing support to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes delivered both directly and through local partners.

Current programming focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, health, HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition and WASH.

In 2012, as part of a global reorganization process, Save the Children
combined the programmes of SC UK, SC Canada and SC Finland to create a
single operation in Kenya.

In February 2014, Save the Children completed a second transition, which saw us join forces with the British INGO, Merlin, and merge their health and nutrition programmes with our own.

Save the Children now has an operational presence in Nairobi, Bungoma,
Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa, Mandera, Turkana and Wajir and works through partners in many other parts of the country. Save the Children employs more than 300 staff and had an operating annual budget in 2014 of approximately US$25 million.

Save the Children’s Programme Development and Quality (PDQ) team leads the development of high quality, innovative programmes that deliver immediate and lasting change for children and provides technical support to monitoring the quality
of the implementation of those programmes.

The PDQ team is comprised of a dedicated Technical Advisor (TA) for each thematic area (Nutrition, Health/HIV, Education, Child Protection, Child Poverty and Child Rights Governance), in addition to a WASH TA and a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Manager.

The current intervention programmes are driven by Save the Children Kenya’s strategic plan 2013-2015.

As the plan is coming to an end in2015, a process of developing a new country strategic plan (CSP) for 2016-2018 has commenced and will be ongoing throughout 2015.

Overview of Role and Responsibilities for the PDQ Intern:
Save the Children Kenya, as part of the Save the Children movement, is undergoing a strategic planning process for the 2016-2018 period (three years).

An initial phase of planning, input and consolidation of thinking is required to enable the country office to develop the plan.

The strategic plan will build on the existing strategic plan, but add a completely new dimension of organisational structure, Save the Children priorities and a much stronger focus of efforts for children in Kenya.

The strategy will provide the broad framework for future work, but also contribute to the wider Save the Children vision, mission and breakthroughs.

The PDQ intern will provide support to the PDQ Director (DPDQ) and PDQ staff in compiling key information, preparing workshops, tracking the CSP process and writing up meeting and workshop notes.

In addition to this, the PDQ intern will provide support to PDQ team
members in the preparation and organization of thematic and
programme-related events, workshops, conferences and meetings, as well
as any other specific tasks as agreed with the DPDQ.

Intern’s Tasks

Under the overall guidance of – and with significant support from – the DPDQ, the intern will:

Support in the setting up agenda for CSP workshops and taking minutes
Organize for and participate in CSP planning meetings
Support Technical Advisors and other CSP task team members in the collation of CSP data
Support in the preparation of presentations and/or other sessions and materials for CSP workshops
Organize the logistics for CSP workshops
Support PDQ team members in the preparation and organization of events, workshops, conference and meetings
Any other specific tasks as assigned by the DPDQ

Timeline: This internship is for a six month duration.

Profile of desired Intern

A degree in social science.
Experience in child rights programing desirable
Have solid knowledge and practical experience in primary research and secondary data review
Excellent organizing, facilitating, presentation and communication skills
Excellent written and spoken English
The capacity and willingness to work well on their own initiative and respond to challenges
Ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams
Willingness to sign and abide by the Save the Children Child Safeguarding Policy
