Terms of Reference for an Intern in Planning and Coordination
Introduction: In line with the UN Women Regional Architecture, the Regional Office for Eastern and Southern Africa in Nairobi provides support services to the countries and has direct oversight of the country offices.
In Eastern and Southern Africa, UNWOMEN has country offices in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa (Multi Country Office), South Sudan, Sudan Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
HQ frequently asks the representatives of the various Country Offices and the Regional Director for briefing notes for high-level meetings e.g. involving the ED/DED and senior Government officials including Presidents.
Sometimes the requests come at very short notice when we are all busy with other priorities and in some cases this has compromised the quality of the briefing notes that have been sent to HQ.
In order to effectively respond to requests for briefing notes by HQ, the regional office is trying to put in place a system to reduce the burden of preparing briefing notes.
We would like to have all the background information ready and updated on monthly basis.
Ideally, this means that the Country Offices/Regional Office will only have to do talking points whenever we get a request for briefing notes since all the background information would be ready.
Under the overall supervision of the Strategic Planning and Coordination Specialist, the intern will have the following specific responsibilities;
In consultation with programme staff and country focal points;
i. Research on important background information for countries in Eastern and Southern Africa which consists of key highlights about the country in particular recent developments or upcoming events e.g. elections, strikes, changes in the economy, changes in government structures, any controversies and or sensitive issues.
ii. Research and provide information on general country background information that should contain information about the country divided in the below three categories:
- Political situation
- Socio-economic context
- Situation of women in the country
iii. In consultation with Country offices provide Biographies of key Government officials.
This should include the following depending on the country context; the President/Head of State, Vice President, Prime Minister, Minister responsible for Gender, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Planning/Finance and the Permanent Representative of your country in New York.
Qualification
Academic qualification in Public Administration, Economics, Political Science or related socials science is a requirement provided that applicants meet either of the following:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation,

- Learning different aspects of UN Women’s priority areas in Eastern and Southern Africa
- Work as a team member in a multicultural setting
