Clinicians Research Entry Levels at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme
The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme is an internationally renowned health research institution. The Programme is committed to carrying out high quality research on health issues affecting Kenya and Africa in general and to building research capacity in the East African Region. Our clinical research aims to improve understanding of the aetiology, burden and risk factors for major diseases, optimise clinical care, develop and test interventions, and influence national and international policy and practice. Currently, several important clinical trials are going on alongside observational studies, studies of the quality and implementation of care, and epidemiological, pathophysiological, immunological and microbiological projects.
Two clinical research entry posts for up to two years from 1st January 2014, based in Kilifi or Nairobi are available. The positions are open to East African clinicians with MMed or equivalent qualification in a field appropriate to their intended clinical project area. Potential project areas are:
- Child health:
- clinical trials and observational studies on severe malnutrition, newborn health, the severely ill child, sickle cell disease, neurological or mental health disorders (Kilifi)
- systematic reviews and clinical epidemiological research leading to developing guidelines for paediatric care (Nairobi)
- Adult health:
- clinical studies of maternal health, mental health disorders, or HIV infection dynamics (Kilifi)
These positions offer an opportunity to work with experienced clinical scientists in a highly dynamic research environment and will suit individuals wishing to pursue a longer term career in research as a clinician-scientist. Post-holders will work on existing research projects, undertake clinical duties, and be exposed to a strong research environment including a wide range of seminars and journals clubs, and mentorship in research methodology in order to develop their own proposals.
Essential Qualifications:
- Degree in Medicine and Surgery
- MMed or equivalent qualification in a specialty relevant to the research topic of interest, or equivalent training and experience
Preferable:
- Demonstrable interest in a career in clinical research
- Demonstrable excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- Demonstrable excellent organizational skills
