Haki Water is UK/Kenya registered charity (http://hakiwater.org), comprising of engineers, scientists and senior managers, who apply skills and knowledge to design and deliver sustainable and innovative water engineering and treatment solutions, and enhance the lives of under-served communities.

Job Description for Country Director – Nairobi based

Reports to:

CEO and Haki Water Board

Leadership and Management Responsibilities

  • The Haki Water Country Director is in charge of all operational and managerial aspects of Haki Water Kenya, and provides direction, program management and program development support, and leadership to the mission in Kenya;
  • Proactively identifies, monitors and assesses program risks (i.e. risk register) and finds/implements solutions;
  • Provides mentorship and training to Kenya country team to develop their capacity to run the program and manage the program team;
  • Determines training needs for the field staff, and advocates and plans for professional development national staff.

Fundraising Responsibilities

  • Proactively identifies and pursues new opportunities for funding and maintain adequate donor funding levels to sustain identified program and support activities, in close collaboration with the Kenya Country team;
  • Develops, drafts and edits concept notes/RFPs and participates in writing and reviewing proposal applications in close collaboration with the Kenya Country team;
  • Updates the country specific strategic plan and proposal, with an emphasis on expansion and scaling impact;
  • Stays abreast of donor funding opportunities, and builds strong relationships with local donor organizations;
  • Coordinates with CEO and Kenya Country team all donor related matters, including reporting, programs, and communications, to ensure financial and programmatic accountability to donors.

Working Relationships

  • Maintains frequent communication with CEO/Board to ensure program activities and objectives are communicated;
  • Works closely with Kenya Country team/Program Team to ensure appropriate coordination of programs;
  • Represents and liaises, establishes and maintains sound partnerships and participates in networks, collaborative activities with relevant stakeholders from the nonprofit, social enterprise, for profit and government sectors to promote the organizations programs.
  • Represents the organization at task force meetings, assessment missions, camp coordination meetings, UN coordination meetings, NGO coordination meetings and/or any other donor related meetings.
  • Coordinates with Communications and Outreach Officer, and establishes, updates contact details of potential local and international donors.

Branding

  • Ensures maximum visibility of the organization among relevant stakeholders from the nonprofit, social enterprise, for profit and government sectors.
  • Leads the production of reports and ensures the timeliness and accuracy of information provided, as well ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Contributes to the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of the organization.

Financial Oversight

  • Provides financial and accounting oversight and ensures that all financial/accounting activities in the Kenya Country office are executed in accordance with Haki Water systems/manuals.
  • Ensures that budgets are prepared in line with the country strategic plan and organisational objectives.
  • Is accountable for Haki Water funds, assets and interests and safeguards them from inefficient or inappropriate use.
  • Develops and applies adequate financial and other management controls as required by Haki Water and donors.
  • Complies with established policies, plans and procedures.
  • Ensures sufficient staff is available to meet the financial policies and procedural requirements.

Human Resources

  • Oversees the recruitment and selection of qualified program field staff, recommends promotions, disciplinary action and termination of staff in consultation with CEO;
  • Collaborates with security coordinator to maintain security of staff in the field locations;
  • Makes frequent site visits to facilities to ensure that appropriate care and training are being conducted and to offer support to field staff;
  • Maintains open lines of communications with all field staff.
  • Provides oversight and ensures that all staff records are appropriately filed, stored and up-to-date.

Compliance

  • Oversees program operations and reporting, ensuring compliance with agency policies and procedures, donor regulations and local laws.
  • Monitors, evaluates and reports on all program activities and progress to CEO/Board and Donors.
  • Oversees the preparation and updating of annual work plans and budgets.
  • Reports regularly to CEO/Board providing timely updates of all situational and project developments.
  • Ensuresthat Organizational/Programmatic Policies and Procedures are up-to-date, and where relevant new ones are prepared and put in place, as well as promoted and disseminated among CEO/Board and Kenya Country team.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate should have degree/diploma in Management, Leadership, MBA.
  • At least 7 years work experience in leading and managing development programs, local teams – expertise in water management projects, or WASH is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in community mobilization and networking in the for profit/government/nonprofit/social enterprise sector.
  • Good organizational and project management skills.
  • A sound understanding of financial control procedures, and experience of developing and monitoring budgets
  • Should be a team player, a good communicator and the ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Computer literate, particularly in the use of MS office and excel.

  • Flexible and able to travel within Kenya at short notice.
