Stabilization Centre Nurse

Location: Lodwar, Turkana

Reports to: Nutrition Officer

Technically responsible to: SC Clinical Officer and DPHC

Relationships internally: All programme and support staff

Relationships externally: Kenya Ministry of Health authorities at district level and Health facility staff

Salary: Kshs 38,000  per month

Benefits: Insurance cover, house allowance at 15% of basic salary, and annual leave entitlement of 24 days per annum at the completion of 12 months of continuous employment with Merlin.

Overall Objectives (scope)

Overall objectives (scope) of the position are to develop and maintain all nutrition aspects of Merlin’s nutrition project in Turkana. 
The post holder will work under the direct supervision and OJT support by the Nutrition Officer and day to day working relationship with the SC Clinical Officer. 
The SC nurse will work within the MoH system and hence will engage with the MoH authorities and staffs at the hospital and district level on a regular basis.Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Implement SC {Stabilization Centre} activities within the integrated paediatric ward and ensure the management of the commodities {food, drugs, and equipment}
  • Systematic nutrition screening of the children under 5 years admitted in the paediatric ward/ stabilization centre, in Lokitaung District hospital.
  • Carry out daily nutritional status monitoring of severely malnourished children as prescribed in the protocol.
  • Prepare and administer the appropriate formulas/feeds for the malnourished children in the SC
  • Record beneficiaries attendance, new admission and discharges
  • Provide appropriate nutrition counseling and health education for the mothers and caretakers.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports for the MOH and Merlin.
  • Ensure continuous availability of drugs and nutrition supplies for the mothers/caretakers.
  • Ensure proper handing over of duties within the SC.
  • Consult and inform supervisor and/or the upper line manager on issues that may affect the smooth operations of the stabilization centre.
  • Perform other duties limited to the Health and nutrition programme as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Qualified Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) or Enrolled Community Nurse (ECN) with at least one year field experience in nutrition monitoring activities, malnutrition case detection and management and EPI/ PHC.
  • Experience in data collection and basic desk analysis.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Training experience in community education.
  • Able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Previous work experience in the MoH structures will be an added advantage.
  • Basic computer skills will also be an added advantage.
