Kemri – Wellcome Trust Research ProgrammePhD Studentship

KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme is well known internationally for its work in tackling malaria and other infectious diseases, particularly bacterial and viral childhood infections.

At the KEMRI-Welcome Trust Research Programme we are keen to build capacity for research in East Africa. We are aware that good PhD training is the foundation for a successful research career.
As such, our PhD scheme is aimed at providing students with an opportunity to carry out their training in a high quality research environment.

The Programme is seeking to recruit a PhD Student to be based in Kilifi.

The PhD student will work on a project characterizing the spatial heterogeneity of malaria transmission, using standard epidemiological analyses and molecular studies.
These studies are based on the observation that malaria transmission is patchy at a local level, with hotspots of intense transmission.
Characterising these hotspots and the transmission networks that underlie them is expected to lead to more effective malaria control strategies.
The successful candidate will receive PhD supervision from two epidemiologists and a bioinformatician.
We are looking for a candidate who has a background in biological science and/or statistical analysis, and wishes to combine both these areas for their PhD.
There will be an opportunity to spend time at the University of Oxford developing further molecular and bioinformatic skills.
Deadline for this application is 17th May 2013.
