CARE for KENYA is looking for an Intern HIV/AIDS counselor for our women empowerment project in Nairobi, Kenya.
Care for Kenya is a New York based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization empowering Kenyan women through vocational training, health education and economic development to create sustainable, life changing improvements for them and their families. We work with women’s groups in the Kibera slum to help those affected by HIV/AIDS to build financially stable, healthy lives to live a poverty free life.
Job Description:
Intern HIV/STD Counselor
Closing Date: May 17, 2013
Position Description: The Intern HIV/STD Counselor shall provide counseling, testing and referral services to residents of Kibera of unknown serostatus. Counseling and Testing will be done on-site at the Care for Kenya women empowerment centre in Kambi Muru, Kibera.
The candidate must be available 3-5 days per week for a minimum commitment of 3 months. Please only apply if you can make this commitment.
Essential Functions:
Key activities of the Intern HIV/STD Counselor will include, but may not be limited to:
- – Conducting confidential/anonymous HIV testing;
- – Providing HIV pre/post test counseling, including administering risk assessment questionnaire and referring clients to appropriate resources;
- – Facilitating the dissemination of information and educational materials relevant to HIV/STDs at health fairs, community events, etc;
- – Coordinating clinic-specific activities such as ordering of supplies and documentation of all clients;
- – Coordinating testing in accordance with established protocols;
- – Maintaining client confidentiality;
- – Maintaining complete and timely written documentation of client contacts and written/verbal communication regarding work activities;
- – Submit monthly and quarterly reports;
- – Participate in trainings/staff meetings as required.
Education and Requirements:
- – Bachelors degree in the fields of social science, public health, social work or related disciplines preferred.
- – HIV pre/post counseling and testing certification required
- – Knowledge of HIV/AIDS
- – Ability to develop rapport and positive relationships with at-risk and hard-to-reach populations including HIV+ individuals. Ability to make decisions according to defined protocols
- – Ability to work with multi-disciplinary approach
- – Excellent verbal/written communications skills and cultural competence in client and community values and behaviors
This position is unpaid, but CARE for Kenya can provide a small stipend to cater for daily expenses.
