Engineering Consultant for Renovation of Office Premises
Terms of Reference
UN Women is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women with the objective of providing support to national partners in implementation of international commitments; financial and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies that promote women’s empowerment and gender equality; and leadership and coordination in UN country teams on their response to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
UN Women in Nairobi is undergoing regionalization and hence the need to undertake the re-organization of its office space in Block M & N of UNON in Gigiri.
The Consultant is expected to work as a Client Project Manager and will be responsible, under the guidance of the Deputy Regional Director and direct supervision of Operations Manager, for managing the completion of space alterations, refurbishment, and liaison with architecture, design and engineering vendors, coordinate staff moves related to the proposed works.
This refinement necessitated modest re-arrangement of offices for efficient and effective business operation. The re-arrangement will focus on having open space (having staffs with similar function at one place) and other core staff, where appropriate, in an enclosed office.
On top of addressing office set up to fit to the refined structure, the physical set up of such offices with varied partners needs to be pleasant. Physical appearance of the office should be attractive and highly conducive both to the client and employees.Contemporary empirical evidence reveals that employees performing in a pleasant environment are more productive and motivated.
In view of these, UN Women in Nairobi is looking for highly qualified designer to provide technical assistance to the office renovation and beautification.

1. Objective
The objective of the assignment is to design office lay out which will serve as a base to solicit and recruit qualified contractors to renovate UN Women Kenya Country Office.
2. Scope of the Assignment
The individual consultant is expected to:
- Produce architectural and structural design based on the needs and specific requirements of UN Women and according to UN regulations.
- Develop seating arrangement, and design.
- Identify the requirement of space; equipment to be relocated/purchased, furniture to be relocated/purchased.
- Develop bills of quantities with specification of quality and type of materials required.
- Provide technical support for evaluation of bids and make recommendations of the company found to be best suited to undertake the office renovation task.
- Liaise frequently with facilities and management unit of UNON to meet the required standard and quality of works especially for electrical and computer network installation.
- Supervise the contractor who will be responsible for portioning the office as per the architectural and structural design.
- Monitor refurbishment works and ensure quality and agreed timelines are achieved.
- Conduct progress reporting meetings with management.
- Perform the oversight /supervision of the project until its completion.
3. Deliverables, Time Frame and Mode of Payment
The first phase of the deliverable is well designed office lay out; both architectural and structural based on the needs of UN Women regional and country offices while the second phase of the deliverable is renovated and pleasant office premise.

4. Structure and Management
The consultant will operate under the direct guidance of UN Women – Operations Manager and senior management. He/she is also expected to liaise with senior management of the Kenya county office as well as relevant colleagues.
5. Qualification and experience
(i) Education
Advanced university Degree in Engineering or related fields
(ii) Experience and Skills
- At least ten years of demonstrated experience in similar projects ,
- Working experience with UN system is desirable
- Full proficiency in using computer software, such as AutoCAD, Microsoft offices, internet, etc.
(iii) Language:
Full proficiency in both spoken and written English
Duration of Assignment:
The successful applicant shall be recruited on a contract for a period of 2 months.
Remuneration:
Remuneration will be based on experience and qualifications and UN Rule and Regulations applying a competitive selection process.
